Let’s be real – power bills aren’t getting any smaller, and with the cost of living climbing faster than a cat up a screen door, every dollar counts. The good news? You might be able to save hundreds of dollars a year on your electricity bill just by switching to a better plan.
And no, it’s not a scam. It’s just about knowing where to look and what to look for. So if you're a Brisbane local and sick of sky-high power prices, here's how to shop smart.
Before you jump into comparisons, dig out your latest power bill and check:
This gives you a baseline to compare new plans against — because a “17% discount” sounds great, until you realise it’s off a higher base rate than your current plan.
The easiest way to see if you're getting a good deal is to use the official government-run energy comparison tool:
π Energy Made Easy - Find the Right Energy Plan
This site is run by the Australian Energy Regulator (AER), not a private company, so it’s independent and shows all available plans, not just the plans companies pay to promote.
All you do is:
Look for plans with low usage rates, low daily charges, and no sneaky exit fees or conditional discounts. If you have a solar system, make sure you keep an eye on the solar feed in tariff too!
Power retailers love confusing the hell out of people. Here’s what to keep an eye on:
π‘ Big Discounts – These can be misleading. A 25% discount might still cost more than a no-discount plan with lower rates.
π Rates That Change Often – Check if the plan is fixed rate or variable. Fixed-rate plans offer peace of mind for a set period.
π° Daily Supply & Meter Charges – These are the hidden killers. Even if your usage rate is low, high daily supply charges or metering fees can quietly drive your bill up – especially if you’re not home much during the day.
π Solar Feed-in Tariffs – If you’ve got solar, make sure you’re getting a decent rate for the power you export.
π§Ύ Bill Credits & Cashback Offers – Sometimes these sound great but check the actual cost of power on the plan.
Once you find a better plan, switching is easy:
And yep – you can change again later if a better deal comes up.
Electricity plans can change regularly, and many default to more expensive rates after your first contract period.
Set a reminder to check your plan! — even add it to your calendar with a note: “Time to see if my electricity retailer is ripping me off.” If you are on a contract we’d suggest setting up a reminder at the end of your contract, if you have no contract set a reminder every 3 months to make sure you’re always getting the best deal.
At Triforce Electrical and Air, we don’t sell power plans — but we do help our Brisbane clients understand how their home is wired, how they use electricity, and what they can do to reduce usage. That includes:
