EV Charging Advice

What to think about before installing an EV charger

Installing a home or business EV charger isn't as simple as plugging into a regular power point. A few things are worth thinking through first, and a licensed electrician will always need to check your setup before any charger goes in. Our guide, Is Your Home Ready for an Electric Car Charger?, walks through the full checklist below in more detail.

  • Home vs. commercial charging

A single home charger for overnight charging is a very different job to multiple chargers for a fleet or customer parking area.

  • Charger and vehicle compatibility

Chargers and EVs use different plug types and charging speeds, so the right charger depends on the vehicle or vehicles you're charging.

  • Charger location and cable route

Where you park and charge affects cable length, mounting and weatherproofing, plus the cable run needs to stay clear of walkways and trip hazards.

  • Switchboard condition and electrical capacity

An older or already-crowded switchboard may need attention first, and your supply needs enough spare capacity for a charger on top of everything else running.

  • Single-phase vs. three-phase supply, and load management

Your supply type affects what charger speeds are realistically available, and a charger may need load management so it doesn't overload the property's supply alongside other appliances.

  • Future vehicle and charging needs

If you're likely to add a second EV or want faster charging later, it's worth planning for that now rather than starting again.

All of the above needs a proper on-site assessment by a licensed electrician – not a guess from a spec sheet. Our team can assess your property and talk you through the right setup for your vehicle and your home or business.
